Supporting People service details

Type of service

Check below for an explanation of the type of service listed.

Accommodation based service

You move into specified accommodation, rather than stay in your own home. It comes with housing-related support (like advice about rent and bills, managing money, claiming benefits, insurance and security, keeping to a tenancy agreement) from specialist staff who are specifically linked to that accommodation. If you move out of the accommodation, you stop getting that support, but you may be referred on to a different resettlement or floating support service if you need further support in your new accommodation.

Accommodation based service with floating/resettlement/outreach support

You move into specified accommodation, rather than stay in your own home. It comes with housing-related support (like advice about rent and bills, managing money, claiming benefits, insurance and security, keeping to a tenancy agreement) from specialist staff who are specifically linked to that accommodation. You can also get help to move on to more independent living, and continued support while you settle into your new home.

Community or social alarm service

An alarm service where older people can signal to support staff or a warden that they need help. The service could come as part of the accommodation (meaning that if you moved out, the alarm would not go with you), or through a portable alarm or special phone link in your own home.

Floating support service

Housing-related support (like advice about rent and bills, managing money, claiming benefits, insurance and security, keeping to a tenancy agreement) from specialist staff to help you live independently. You could be already living in your own home, or about to move in.

Home Improvement Agency (HIA) service

A free service for older homeowners to identify essential home repairs, help find ways to pay for repairs and to use reputable contractors. Plus a Handyhelp service for very small repairs and home safety checks.

Outreach service

Support for people sleeping rough, or who are unable to engage with mainstream services for other reasons, to help them get access to vital services, and to find and maintain suitable accommodation.

Resettlement service

Help to find and maintain suitable accommodation after a period of homelessness. You get support and advice about how to live as independently as possible. From how to set up and run your home well (turning on gas, electricity and water, finding furniture, sorting out rent and bills, claiming benefits, keeping to a tenancy agreement); to making the most of your neighbourhood (finding shops and services, looking for jobs, using leisure time); to getting in touch with extra help (expert advice on things like debt, mental health, drugs or alcohol, and contacting social services or other organisations).
